CHRISTMAS SHUT DOWN HOURS – Water New Zealand Office

THE YEAR IN REVIEW
With Christmas only a few weeks away and 2011 drawing to a close we take time to reflect on the past year.
We are immediately reminded of the destruction caused to the Canterbury region from the earthquakes over the past year and more.
While the impact of the tragic loss of life is immeasurable, it brings into sharp focus our system of governance. There was considerable loss of life as a result of one of the earthquakes, however many more could have been lost, if it weren’t in part for the system of governance we’ve developed for building in New Zealand. It contrasts sharply with the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti in early 2010 that claimed over 200,000 lives. Haiti is a country with vastly different political settings to New Zealand’s. By international standards governance for our building environment in New Zealand did stand up pretty well.
The year also brought many highlights. For me two events at the annual conference stood out. The first was the constructive way in which members debated a suggested revised governance system for water services at the Friday Forum. The second was the annual dinner. This part of the conference provides the only opportunity for members to gather and celebrate the contribution they all make to New Zealand Inc. I doubt that anyone would put money on a suggestion that 500 odd engineers might be persuaded to break dance together under instruction from the Topp Twins. They did!
A take home message might be that water services professionals are secure in the knowledge that they do make a very positive contribution to New Zealand Inc. That is as it should be.
On behalf of the Board and staff, I thank all members who contributed so generously to Water New Zealand during the year, and wish you well for the upcoming holiday season.
