Christmas shut down hours – Water New Zealand office
THE YEAR IN REVIEW With Christmas only a few weeks away and 2009 drawing to a close it is a time to reflect on the past year; a difficult period for the many employers and employees personally affected by the global recession. 2009 has been a significant year for the water industry in New Zealand. Major changes include the Government’s new policy initiatives for water aimed at addressing significant issues that have been building for some time. These include declining freshwater quality, allocation, governance arrangements, improved productivity and legal matters under the purview of the Treaty of Waitangi. Along the way we’ve had Auckland governance reforms, the first stage RMA reforms, reviews of two regional councils, deferment of implementation of mandatory drinking water standards, and effectively an end to any new initiatives under the sanitary works subsidy scheme. The portents for 2010 are for more quite significant change, with the Land and Water Forum delivering some policy options, the form and function of the newly established Environmental Protection Authority being further clarified, a 20 year Infrastructure Plan being put in place, and further reform of the Local Government Act. The latter will allow for more flexibility round involvement of the private sector in water utility management, as well as mandatory performance benchmarking. Internally the trading name for the organisation has been changed and we’ve implemented a revised strategic plan, re-branding and re-positioning our position in the marketplace. We’ve had to deal with the effects of the recession. A highlight would be the ongoing success of our events programme, including our annual conference. We have also reviewed and revised the way we communicate internally with our special interest groups, and externally with New Zealand Inc. We would like to take this opportunity to thank members, including those who serve passionately and ably on our SIGs and committees for your support for Water New Zealand in 2009. We wish you and your loved ones a happy, safe and prosperous 2010. Seasons greetings
