REVISED DRAFT POLICY ON CENTRAL LEADERSHIP – NOW OPEN FOR MEMBERSHIP COMMENT

Water New Zealand draft policies are considered by the Board, and then made open for membership feedback and comment before being ratified. If an existing policy is substantively modified, it will be subjected to this consultation process again. The Board has reviewed and substantively revised its policy on central leadership, and therefore invites feedback and comment from members. The draft policy can be viewed here.

CURRENT AFFAIRS

Dairy Water Plans Denied - Controversial dairying developments in the Upper Waitaki valley have failed to get irrigation consents. Environment Canterbury-appointed independent hearings commissioner Paul Rogers announced yesterday that the applications of three companies – Southdown Holdings, Williamson Holdings and Five Rivers – to collectively irrigate more than 5300 hectares of land have been turned down. Read more.

Waste Recycling Pilot Awarded to City - Palmerston North's struggling wastewater treatment plant has been chosen for a $1 million pilot scheme to recycle waste sludge into re-useable chemical by-products. Environment Minister Nick Smith announced government funding for the project in the city this morning. Read more.

Stratford Water Costs to Double - High water users connected to Stratford's supply could see their water rates double in the next financial year. The Stratford District Council voted in favour of a proposal to charge businesses $1.20 per cubic metre, up from 61c, while also using a targeted rate reserve to smooth the burden for all water users. Ministry water guide described as 'crock' - An Environment Ministry's guide to implementing the national policy statement for fresh water management has been described by the Otago Regional Council as a "crock" and full of inconsistencies. Read more.

River group loses battle against sewage - Permission has been given for New Plymouth District Council to pump Waitara and New Plymouth sewage during the building of a $14 million pipeline and then for 30 years from the treatment plants of both towns. Read more.

The Ministry of Health has provided clarification on timelines for completion of S12 of the drinking water standard for rural agricultural water supplies. OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR – ASSETS AND SERVICES

CLOSES 9 DECEMBER 2011

In this key role you will lead and manage an internal service unit who provide physical works services for planned and reactive maintenance principally in the areas of reticulation networks for water supplies, sewerage, and stormwater drainage and water and sewer treatment plants. This includes day to day operation of sewer and water treatment plants. The position is based in Blenheim.

You will have a minimum of 10 years technical experience in the water industry and hold an NZCE or Water and/or Sewer Treatment Diploma or another suitable trade qualification in engineering. To compliment this you will have top notch management and budgeting skills to take responsibility for driving the overall performance and effectiveness of this unit. Empathy with our ratepayers is another essential attribute. You will need to be able to find your way around a keyboard, become familiar with our information systems and hold a current clean driver’s licence.

ENGINEER – WATER ASSETS

As the ‘Home of Champions’, Waipa District Council pursues excellence in all we do. In partnership with our community, we promote the wellbeing of the Waipa District and its people, and aim to be the place to Live, Work and Play.

Reporting to the Strategic Infrastructure Engineer, this mid-level position is required to provide timely technical advice, effective scoping and reporting on piped assets and professional service contracts for Council’s wastewater, stormwater and water. While working closely with the Asset Information/GIS teams and contractors, the engineer will be a key part of the team involved with delivering significant infrastructure projects relating to the upgrade of Waipa’s water assets.

Key attributes and skills sought for this position include:

  • Working knowledge of contract management, best practice engineering standards and legislation as they relate to water assets and maintenance.
  • The ability to provide well considered technical advice on asset issues relating to water services, more specifically – stormwater, water and wastewater.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Sound integrity and motivation to deliver on Council’s long term goals by consistently meeting operational deadlines.
  • A demonstrated ability to proactively think, plan and deliver on the Water Services asset objectives.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work in a motivated team.
  • Confident project liaison and negotiation skills, delivered with diplomacy and tact.
  • A ‘can-do’ attitude and strong customer service philosophy.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification and knowledge of the public sector and/or local government sector is advantageous.

This exciting role will appeal to an intermediate engineering generalist looking for an opportunity to play a vital role in the delivery of Waipa’s water services. Developing value-adding relationships and having a solution orientated focus will be the key to success at Waipa.
