Mrs Ogg works tirelessly for the community in many capacities including being a life member of the Auckland Brain Injury Association, an active member of both the Federation of Graduate Women and Age Concern – passing on her expertise in nutrition to the latter organisation each week as part of its “Eat Well, Live Well” programme.

Cameron Calkoen received the only youth award for helping to build a Vanuatu hospital in 2006. The 23-year old is also an ambassador for the North Shore Life Centre and the Kids Help Foundation and received his nomination for helping disabled youth to aim high despite adversity.

Taking care of the air we breathe: Did you know that every day we inhale around 14,000 litres of air as we take 26,000 breaths? If that air is polluted, it can damage your health. Where pollution impacts on the quality of air within North Shore City, the Auckland Regional Council should be contacted to do something about it. More information

Parksafe officer Jane Watts' bravery foiled a Takapuna robberyYour Neighbourhood

Jane chalks up bravery honour: A would-be robber got more than he bargained for when he tried to rob a Takapuna fruit and vegetable store recently. Parksafe officer Jane Watts was on duty when she saw a hooded teenager trying to rob the store. Flying into action, Jane ran at the attacker wielding her chalk stick and duly sent him and his accomplice packing.

Grateful store owner Vannkheng Mao paid tribute to Jane’s brave actions at a special tribute ceremony given by North Shore City councillors to Jane where she was awarded with a certificate for bravery.

Jane said that in spite of hurting her leg during the incident she would do it all again if she saw someone else in need of help.

“I saw someone in need of help and so I helped them,” she said. “That’s just what you do; it’s part of everyday life.”

Mayor George Wood presented Jane with her certificate and a gift voucher in recognition of her bravery.

The citation reads: ‘This certificate is awarded to honour Ms Watts’ bravery and to mark the city’s gratitude for a selfless act which was beyond the call of duty’.

A former Police area commander, Mr Wood said that on behalf of the community the council was grateful for her actions.

“We’re proud to mark the efforts of a staff member who has performed above and beyond the call of duty,” he said.

Far from being the parking “control freaks” they are often unfairly called, Parksafe wardens play an important role in the business community by ensuring the parking spaces are regularly “turned over”. If cars could stay in the same space all day, there would be no room for new customers to come into town and park, and the businesses would suffer.

And when you have Parksafe officers of Jane Watts’ calibre, the community can also feel comfortable that there are caring people out there who may just be in the right place at the right time if help is needed.
