June 2008 |
Welcome to the second community edition of Ten-One for June 2008. |
In this issue there are two stories on drugs. One announces the introduction of the Drug Harm Index - a new tool to help Police and partner agencies focus their resources where illicit drugs are causing the most harm. The other story reveals how cannabis remains the most widely used drug in New Zealand, accounting for more hospital admissions than all other drugs combined. There's a look at the New Zealand approach to educating and informing young people about the risks of being online, based on an article written by Police Commissioner Howard Broad. Two stories reveal how Police are having a positive influence in two vastly different locations - one in the east Hamilton suburb of Enderley, the other in the Timor Leste city of Suai. Finally there's an article on Papakura Police who recently found and transported a crocodile back to its rightful owner. Now that's a better work story! . Changing communities |
Enderley kids used to give the fingers and yell out “pigs” at passing Police cars. These days, they wave and call out Community Constable Mason Lepou’s name as he walks or drives down the street. Operation Beautify appeals to the eye Community policing takes many forms, and staff deployed to the Timor Leste city of Suai are leading a beautification project to return some visual order to the place.
